Controlling pain is an important part of veterinary medicine. Pain is a conscious, noxious experience and therefore pain management is paramount to animal welfare. The physiological effects of pain are also undesirable.

Pain in animals must be correctly assessed in order to be dealt with appropriately. There are many possible analgesic drugs that may be used:

NSAIDs

Steroids

Opioids

NMDA Antagonists

Alpha-2 Agonists

Local Anaesthetics
